Progressive enhancementis the process of developing functional web sites for users without JavaScript installed. Although JavaScript is widely accepted and used, an estimated 10% of internet users do not have JavaScript enabled in their browsers, either by choice, missing technical savvyness or limited technical options. When websites are developed using JavaScript without these users in mind, sites often are not accessible because of missing content or nonfunctional menues for these users.
With this in mind, websites should be developed keeping progressive enhancement technologies in mind, creating code with JavaScript but still keeping all functionality of the site. Progressive enhanced websites ensure web site functionality, all navigation and elements will still work, content will be displayed and no informaiton is missing.
Why Web Design standards?
To make a Web Design project competitive for today's market, it needs to adhere to modern web technology rules as advised under the World wide web consortium.
Web sites designed adhering to web standards provide many benefits:
1 - Improved hit rates - Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
Poorly/old standard sites rank badly in search engines resulting in low hit rates. Modern web projects score highest in search engine algorithm listings, bump up their Alexa ranking and show high improvement rates along other findability metrics in search engines.
2 - Fast response times - Performance:
Studies show user frustrations levels regarding low response times are extremely low. Leaving a site is just a click away - modern web technologies speed up response times and decrease abandonment rates for your site.
3 - Good for your budget - Web Design Development/Maintenance:
Modern web technology automates tasks of the design process resulting in lighter code and fast response times. Site Setup/maintenance is improved and less cost intensive.
4 - Complying with Web Design accessibility laws:
Modern web techniques make web sites accessible to different kind of devices, support non-traditional and emerging devices, from wireless gadgets to Braille output devices and screen readers including mobile and browsing tools used by people with disabilities.
5 - Make browser issues the past - Cross browser compatibility:
Modern Web Design standards future-proof web sites and content. Correctly authored sites will be indefinitely supported by allbrowsers even with future versions. Sites not developed under these standards do not have this guarantee, at best they stuck in time, at worse, they cease to work. Modern web techniques also eradicate outdated code slowing techniques (code forking, separating/sniffing out browser versions etc.)
